ประวัติอำเภอช้างกลาง

ประวัติความเป็นมา ตำบลช้างกลาง การยกทัพด้วยพล 17 หมื่น ของพระเจ้าสุชิตราชแห่งตามพรลิงคม (นครศรีธรรมราช) ไปตีอาณาจักรละโว้ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 1570 ย่อมแสดงว่า นครศรีธรรมราชได้ใช้กองทัพช้างตั้งแต่บัดนั้นเป็นต้นมา และช้างที่จังมาฝึกเป็นช้างศึกหรือช้างที่ใช้ในราชการ หรือช้างเผือกที่ส่งไปบรรณาการแก่กรุงศรีอยุธยา ก็ได้มาจากป่าบริเวณเขาหลวงแถบเขาพระเมรุ (เขาเหมน) ทุ่งสง ฉวาง นาบอน ทุ่งใหญ่ ถ้าพรรณรา ลำพูน (พระแสง) นั่นเอง ช้างที่จับมาได้นำมาฝึกแล้วเข้าสังกัดประจำกรมต่างๆ ซึ่งมีทั้งหมด 3 กรม คือ

1. กรมช้างขวา ตั้งอยู่ที่เวียงสระ

2. กรมช้างกลาง ตั้งอยู่หมู่ที่ 5 ตำบลช้างกลาง จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช ในปัจจุบัน

3. กรมช้างซ้าย ตั้งอยู่ที่ตำบลช้างซ้าย อำเภอพระพรหมในปัจจุบัน
